How to Apply for Medicaid in Michigan: A Step-by-Step Guide for Caregivers & Families
If you're exploring the Michigan Home Help Program as a way to get paid for caring for a loved one, the very first step is making sure the person receiving care has active Medicaid. Without Medicaid, they won’t be eligible for the program.
At Care Plan Inc., we do not assist with applying for Medicaid, but this guide will help you understand where to apply, what you’ll need, and what to expect.
🩺 What Is Medicaid and Why Is It Required?
Medicaid is a public health insurance program for low-income individuals, funded by both the state and federal government. The Michigan Home Help Program — which allows friends and family to be paid for caregiving — is entirely funded through Medicaid.
That means the person receiving care must have active Medicaid before you can begin the caregiver sign-up process.

⏳ How Long Does It Take?
It generally takes up to 45 days to process a Medicaid application. If documents are missing or need to be verified, it may take longer.
Once the care recipient is approved for Medicaid, you can begin the Home Help Program enrollment process.

Care Plan Inc. does not assist with Medicaid applications.
We step in after your loved one has active Medicaid coverage and help you through the Home Help Program steps from there.
