How to Apply for the Michigan Home Help Program
If you or a loved one needs help at home with everyday activities, the Michigan Home Help Program may be the solution. This Medicaid-funded program allows you to hire and pay caregivers to assist with personal care tasks like dressing, eating, grooming, and moving around safely.
Step 1: Determine Medicaid Eligibility
To apply, the person needing care must be Medicaid-eligible. You can apply for Medicaid online through MI Bridges or in person at your local MDHHS office. If you’re unsure of eligibility, MDHHS caseworkers can help you evaluate your situation.
Step 2: Schedule a Needs Assessment
A caseworker from Adult Services will visit the home to assess the level of care required. They'll determine how many hours of help the client qualifies for by evaluating their ability to perform ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) and IADLs (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living).
Step 3: Submit Required Forms
These forms are essential to the approval process and must be filled out accurately. Missing or incomplete forms can cause delays in processing your application.
Step 4: Register as a Caregiver
If a family member or friend is providing care, they must:
Pass a background check
Care Plan Inc. helps you enroll in the CHAMPS provider system
Complete online orientation
Understand timesheet reporting and payroll procedures
Caregivers must also provide their Social Security number, valid ID, and other documentation for enrollment.
Step 5: Start Providing Care
Once all documentation is verified and approved, care services can begin. You will also be trained on how to submit timesheets and get paid. Payments are processed every two weeks once services are approved.
