5 Things to Know About Michigan’s Home Help Program

The Michigan Home Help Program is one of the most valuable benefits available to people with Medicaid who need help at home. If you're caring for a loved one, here are five key things to know before you apply.

1. Medicaid Is Required

To qualify for Home Help, the person receiving care must be enrolled in Michigan Medicaid. If your loved one does not have Medicaid yet, they need to apply through MI Bridges before starting the caregiver application process.

2. Family Caregivers Can Be Paid

In most cases, Michigan allows family members to be paid for caregiving services. This includes adult children, siblings, grandparents, and friends. Spouses and parents of minors are not eligible.

3. A Doctor Must Confirm the Care Needs

A licensed medical provider must complete a DHS 54A form. This form confirms that your loved one needs help with tasks like bathing, dressing, cooking, or mobility. This step is required before the program approves any hours or payments.

4. Caregivers Must Be Registered

To get paid, the chosen caregiver must enroll in CHAMPS. This is the system Michigan uses to register caregivers and manage payments. Care Plan Inc helps with this process and submits your hours for you every week.
