Does Medicaid Pay Family Caregivers in Michigan?

If you are helping a loved one with daily tasks, you may be wondering if Medicaid will pay you to be their caregiver. In Michigan, the answer is yes in many cases.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services offers the Home Help Program, a Medicaid-funded service that allows certain family members to be paid for the care they provide at home.

Who Qualifies as a Paid Family Caregiver

Michigan Medicaid may pay:

  • Adult children caring for a parent

  • Siblings caring for a brother or sister

  • Grandchildren or grandparents

  • Other relatives, roommates, or friends

Note: Spouses and parents of minor children are not eligible to be paid caregivers through this program.

What Is Required

To qualify, the person receiving care must:

  • Be enrolled in Michigan Medicaid

  • Need help with Activities of Daily Living such as bathing, dressing, or mobility

  • Have a doctor complete a DHS 54A medical form

  • Choose their caregiver and submit a DHS 390 form

The caregiver must also be enrolled in CHAMPS, the state’s Medicaid caregiver system.
