Get Paid to Care for a Loved One in Michigan

Download your free step-by-step guide to apply for Michigan’s Medicaid-funded Home Help Program.

Your Path to Becoming a Paid Caregiver

Step 1: Make Sure the Person Getting Care Has Medicaid

To qualify for the program, your loved one must have active Michigan Medicaid. If they don't, they'll need to apply first at michigan.gov/mibridges.

Step 3: Choose a Caregiver and Fill Out the Application

You'll complete a caregiver form (the DHS-390) that lists who will be helping. A family member, friend, or roommate may qualify to get paid. We'll help you fill it out.

Step 2: Get a Medical Form From Their Doctor

Their doctor needs to fill out a form (called the DHS-54A) that confirms they need help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or cooking. We can guide you on how to request this.

Step 4: Meet With a State Worker at the Home

The State will send a caseworker (an Adult Services Worker) to the home. They'll review what kind of help is needed and approve the number of care hours.

Step 5: We Register You to Get Paid

We take care of the final step: your official caregiver registration in Michigan's system (called CHAMPS). Once approved, you can start getting paid for the hours you provide.
